Costa Rica Concludes Destruction of Firearms and Ammunition with OAS Support
October 25, 2014
The Government of Costa Rica, through the Ministry of Public Security and with the support and certification of the Organization of American States (OAS), carried out this week a phase of destruction of firearms and ammunition in which 3,190 firearms of various types and sizes, and 59,970 rounds of small-caliber ammunition, mostly seized in the streets, were eliminated.
All operations were executed according to international standards by members of the Public Security Forces of Costa Rica, and supervised by the Program of Assistance for the Control of Arms and Munitions of the Department of Public Security of the OAS. The Embassy of the United States of America in San Jose provided tools and equipment to carry out the destruction.
The technical assistance and certification by the Department of Public Security of the OAS is done within the framework of the Agreement for the Cooperation and Technical Assistance between the Republic of Costa Rica through the Ministry of Public Security and the General Secretariat of the OAS regarding the Program of Assistance for the Control of Arms and Munitions in Costa Rica, signed in July of 2011. Since then Costa Rica has destroyed more than two million rounds of ammunition and more than thirty-five thousand of long and short firearms with OAS certification.
The Department of Public Security of the Organization of American States, through the Program of Assistance for the Control of Arms and Munitions, has supported Central American states in the destruction of more than 1,600 tons of ammunition and thousands of arms in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua since 2007.
