OAS Secretary General Sends Condolences to Panama for Deaths and Damages Caused by Heavy Rains

  November 27, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today sent his condolences and those of the institution he heads to the President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, “for the regrettable loss of human lives as a consequence of the intense rains that have lashed your country in recent days and the resulting floods.”

In a letter addressed to the Panamanian leader, the leader of the OAS assured him that “despite the pain that comes with the loss of life, I am sure that with the strength and capacity for action that characterize the Panamanian people, you will be able to overcome this catastrophe.”

The Secretary General highlighted in his words of condolence that the current situation in Panama “is a pattern that is repeated throughout our region, and that is why it is important to keep this issue a priority in the hemispheric agenda,” as did the Heads of State and Government at the Summit of the Americas in April,“ at which the prevention and mitigation of disasters was one of the central issues.”

The letter to President Martinelli concludes with the offer by Secretary General Insulza of “the platform provided by the OAS to support Panama in these difficult moments.”
