OAS Condemns Acts of Violence ahead of the Regional and Municipal Elections in Peru

  October 3, 2014

The Electoral Observation Mission in Peru (OAS/EOM), headed by the Uruguayan senator Sergio Abreu, condemns the attack against a national police patrol that was carrying electoral material in the department of Ayacucho and that left two agents dead and seven injured. The Mission sends its condolences to the victim's families as well as to the National Police.

The OAS/EOM strongly rejects any type of electoral violence and highlights the importance that acts like today's are investigated and punished as they only aim to hurt the bases of democracy.

In addition, the Mission calls the attention of all sectors of the Peruvian society as to prevent that isolated acts like these do not affect the preparation and development of the electoral process. The Mission hopes that this Sunday a pacific environment prevails; allowing Peruvians to vote in a free and safe manner, making democracy win over violence.
