OAS Secretary General Met with Foreign Ministers of the Region at the United Nations General Assembly
September 24, 2014
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, held meetings today with several foreign ministers from the Americas at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, in the framework of the General Assembly taking place this week.
The OAS leader met with the Foreign Ministers of El Salvador, Hugo Martínez; Guatemala, Carlos Raúl Morales; Haiti, Duly Brutus; Honduras, Mireya Agüero; Peru, Gonzalo Gutiérrez and the Dominican Republic, Andrés Navarro García.
During the meetings, the officials discussed the results of the Special General Assembly of the OAS on the issue of drugs held in Guatemala City last week, that concluded with the unanimous approval of a resolution that highlights “the importance of Hemispheric and international cooperation to jointly tackling the world drug problem, by promoting and strengthening comprehensive policies and, where appropriate, the modernization and professionalization of government institutions.”
Secretary General Insulza and the foreign ministers also discussed ways to continue the debate on drugs in the Americas, which began with the presentation in May, 2013 of the Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas, produced by the OAS, and which continued in the General Assembly of Antigua, Guatemala, a month later. The officials also shared points of view on the current political and economic context in the Hemisphere, in particular in Central America and the Caribbean.
