Spain to Contribute $2.7 million in 2016 to OAS Programs on Peace, Democracy, Human Rights, Security, and Development
October 29, 2015
The Spanish government will contribute 2.45 million euros (about 2.7 million dollars) to the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2016 for programs on peace, democracy, human rights, security, and development, according to the agreement signed today at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The OAS Senior Adviser on Strategic and Organizational Development Affairs, Luis Porto, and the Permanent Observer of Spain to the OAS, Ambassador Jorge Hevia, were responsible for signing the agreement at a meeting in which Mónica Colomer Selva, Director of Cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean of the Spanish International Cooperation Agency for Development (AECID), participated via video-conference.
Porto underscored that “the Spanish contribution is directly related to the four pillars of the OAS: democracy, human rights, security and integral development” and added that the Spanish cooperation will also focus on other new areas, such as “access to rights and the Internet, and the prevention of social conflicts related to productive investments.” For his part, Ambassador Hevia said that the support of his country to the Organization seeks “to maintain the same line followed by Spanish cooperation thus far, while also accompanying the priorities of Secretary General Luis Almagro’s new administration.”
