OAS: Data on Citizen Security in the Americas about Honduras, Consistent with Official Information

  September 21, 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS) released, on September 14, information about Honduras, published in the “Report on Citizen Security in the Americas 2012,” including official data on intentional homicides offered by the government of Honduras for the period 2000 – 2011. The data given by the OAS on homicides in Honduras were released by the National Police of Honduras, are public, and are consistent with the figures of the National Commissioner of Human Rights (Conadeh) of Honduras for 2000 - 2011.

In a statement recently published by the newspapers El Heraldo and La Prensa of Honduras, on September 20, 2012, the Minister of Security of the country, Pompeyo Bonilla, said the National Commissioner of Human Rights of Honduras (Conadeh) “recorded a reduction in the homicide rate in the country in 2012.”

Taking into account the statistics through 2011, and then 2012, there is no contradiction in the figures given in the report of the OAS, as it does not analyze data for 2012 and, at no point reports that the homicide rate in Honduras has risen this year.

In the preparation of the report, the OAS reiterates its strict adherence to the official security data offered by the countries involved that are presented in its report.
