OAS Deploys Electoral Mission to Local Elections in Colombia

  October 19, 2015

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) for the elections of local authorities of Colombia, headed by the former President of Guatemala Alvaro Colom, today arrived in the country to observe the vote on Sunday. The Mission will include 40 experts and observers that will be deployed in 22 departments of the country.

This morning, the Chief of Mission signed the Agreement on the Observation Procedure of the Mission, in which the EOM is guaranteed access to all the information on the organization, management and supervision of the electoral process. Former President Colom will meet with electoral authorities and government officials, candidates, members of civil society and security forces. In addition, he will visit the departments of Cundinamarca and Antioquia to learn about the progress of the electoral calendar in those regions.

On October 25, there will be three OAS Electoral Observation Missions, with more than 230 observers, operating in three sub-regions: Central and South America and the Caribbean. In addition to the Mission in Colombia, there will be observers in Haiti and Guatemala. For the first time in more than 50 years, there will be three EOMs operating in three countries on the same day.
