OAS Assistant Secretary General Calls for More Youth Opportunities in the Americas

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, says the youth of the Americas continue to face an “age-based bias,” which limits their potential to contribute in a more meaningful way to society.
Ambassador Ramdin, who chairs the OAS Working Group on Youth made the statement on the occasion of International Youth Day. "The Americas is home to hundreds of millions of youth and regardless of country, ethnicity or status, they are strategic game changers who cannot be ignored. We must make deliberate investments to tap into their potential by ensuring access to more opportunities,” said the senior OAS official.
In commemoration of International Youth Day, the OAS also welcomed 15 teams of young eco-entrepreneurs participating in Week2Grow, an intensive week long training program for young people in the field of entrepreneurship and sustainable development, organized by the OAS, the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT), PepsiCo and the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.
“I actually embrace the term ‘restless youth’ since it captures their energy and drive. I’ve witnessed the power of our youth to transform an environment through their voice, creativity and resourcefulness. I hope programs like Week2Grow can be expanded, so that the potential of our young people can be developed and opportunities can be provided for them to make a contribution to peace, prosperity and security,” added Assistant Secretary General Ramdin.
Among the major youth initiatives being undertaken by the hemispheric Organization is the “OAS Youth Conference of the Americas 2013: Youth in Action,” which will take place in Washington DC on November 5, 2013.
