  August 12, 2010

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, in a letter sent to President Juan Manuel Santos, today expressed his “deepest solidarity and support for the Colombian Government and people” following the “reprehensible terrorist attack” carried out today in Bogota against the facilities of Caracol Radio and the news agency EFE.

“The OAS will always be available to continue collaborating in all efforts to end violence in the region,” the Secretary General wrote, “especially when the intention is not just to intimidate the general public but specifically the media.”

The topmost representative of the hemispheric organization also recalled that, to the OAS, “freedom of expression constitutes a central element” of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
