New Representative of Saint Lucia to the OAS Presents Credentials
August 10, 2012
The new Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the Organization of American States (OAS), Sonia Johnny, today presented her credentials to the OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, taking her position for the second time as her country’s Ambassador to the regional body.
Ambassador Johnny recognized the work of the Secretary General in maintaining the “core values” of the organization: “Mister Secretary General, we know that defending democracy is a never-ending task which calls for great sacrifices at critical periods in the history of peoples who cherish their freedom and sovereignty.” “It is within this backdrop,” she added, “that Saint Lucia reaffirms its commitment to the work of the Organization of American States as we advance in the promotion of democracy and the respect for human rights.”
For his part, Secretary General Insulza welcomed Ambassador Johnny on her return to the organization: “We remember,” he said, “the force and clarity with which you always present your ideas.”
The Secretary General echoed the Representative of Saint Lucia on the value of diversity to the organization. “We are very diverse, we are very different,” he said, “We have very different ideas, we have different policies, we have different proposals, and sometimes we have strong discussions but we always stay together to solve our problems and move forward toward the common goals that we all share.”
The ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, was also attended by the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the OAS Stephen Vasciannie, Permanent Representatives from the majority of the members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), numerous Ambassadors to the organization and several high-ranking OAS officials.
