OAS HONORS MEMORY OF EDWARD KENNEDY, “FRIEND OF DEMOCRACY” IN LATIN AMERICA

  August 26, 2009

The Permanent Representatives of the 33 Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) today held a minute of silence in memory of US Senator Edward Kenney, who died on Tuesday. The act took place during a regular session of the Permanent Council and was made at the request of Pedro Oyarce, the Council’s President and Ambassador of Chile before the OAS.

The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, called Kennedy “a great friend of democracy” in Latin America. He also recalled the significance of a visit the US legislator made to Chile at a time of great political repression in that South American country, and highlighted Kennedy’s contribution to “clarify the truth of what happened in Chile and defend the cause of democracy and human rights.”

W. Lewis Amselem, the US Representative before the OAS, also referred to the distinguished political figure of Edward Kennedy, brother of President John F. Kennedy (1961-1963), and emphasized his long trajectory and leadership in the Congress of his country.
