New Representative of Uruguay to the OAS Presents Credentials
July 20, 2012
The new Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the Organization of American States (OAS), Milton Romani, today presented his credentials to Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, in a formal ceremony in which the majority of the ambassadors to the hemispheric organization participated.
During the ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, Ambassador Romani delivered greetings to Secretary General Insulza from the President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Luis Almagro.
"It a great honor for me to present these credentials as well as the contribution that Uruguay, with its democratic and cultural traditions, will undoubtedly make to this multilateral organization," said Ambassador Romani.
The new representative of Uruguay to the OAS noted that the regional body has a "very important" role in the "consolidation of peace, democracy and respect for human rights", as well as in the "sustainable integral development to make many people happier and more prosperous, which is the goal we all have."
The Secretary General welcomed the representative of Montevideo and highlighted his career as the head of the National Drugs Bureau in Uruguay and in the field of human rights, an area in which Ambassador Romani recently represented his country in international forums.
"You come to our organization at a very important time," said Secretary General Insulza, recalling that Uruguay has "a very longstanding reputation in the OAS," which includes having provided the longest-serving Secretary General, Dr. José Mora, who served between 1956 and 1968.
