STATEMENT BY THE OAS SECRETARY GENERAL ON THE UPCOMING MISSION TRIP TO HONDURAS

  August 8, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, stated today that “the objective of the Delegation that will travel to Honduras in the upcoming days will be to reach an agreement through dialogue on the San José Accord put forward by President Óscar Arias”. This proposal, Insulza added, “will mean the full reestablishment of democracy and the rule of law, incorporating everyone´s point of view. The goal of the Delegation is not to impose a position, but to create adialogue on the San José Accord, with the conviction that mutual understanding and national reconciliation may be achieved through this proposal and to allow Honduras to democratically elect its representatives on November 29”.

Finally, Insulza stressed that this is a Delegation of Foreign Ministers that represents the General Assembly, the greatest body within the OAS. “Whatever is said by these Foreign Ministers during this period is the voice of the OAS, and their conclusions will guide the General Assembly and Permanent Council in the next few weeks. As such the General Secretariat will offer them its full support and will work to enforce its decisions through guarantees offered by the San José Accord”, stated the head of the main hemispheric body.
