OAS Delivers Contribution to Recovery in Dominica following Erika
September 3, 2015
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, today delivered a check in the amount of $25,000 to the Permanent Representative of Dominica to the OAS, Hubert Charles, which represents the initial contribution of the Organization to the emergency phase of recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Erika.
Secretary General Almagro has issued a call for mechanisms by which the OAS could engage in a triangular response to the post-catastrophe needs of Dominica by working with partner agencies of the Inter-American system. The OAS leader has emphasized the need for organizations such as the OAS to lead by example in establishing functional mechanisms for returning to normalcy the lives of affected populations towards a progressive path to full recovery.
Based on official preliminary estimates, the Government of Dominica has launched an appeal in an effort to raise fifteen million dollars to address the emergency response phase. The OAS has been urged to use its fraternal linkages as the foremost hemispheric organization in galvanizing the technical and financial support of member states, and to urge the proactive collaboration of agencies of the Inter-American System.
Ambassador Charles expressed appreciation for the initial monetary support of the OAS on behalf of the Government and People of the Commonwealth of Dominica, and reiterated his nation’s thanks for the organization’s commitment to providing technical and logistical support in the path to recovery and rehabilitation which lies ahead.
