Resolution by the OAS Permanent Council to Convene a Special General Assembly on the Situation in Honduras

SITUATION IN HONDURAS

(Approved at the meeting held on May 24, 2011)

THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,

RECALLING resolution AG/RES. 2 (XXXVII-E/09) of July 4, 2009, regarding the suspension of the Honduran state from the exercise of its right to participate in the Organization of American States;

REITERATING the principles established in the Charter of the Organization of American States and in the Inter-American Democratic Charter concerning the defense and preservation of democratic institutions in member states; and

CONSIDERING recent developments in the situation in Honduras and the successful efforts of the people and Government of the sister Republic of Honduras,

RESOLVES:

To convene a special session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly, to be held at the headquarters of the Organization on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, so that it might adopt such decisions as it deems appropriate, regarding the lifting of the suspension of the right of Honduras to participate in the OAS, in accordance with the Charter of the Organization of American States and with the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
