VENEZUELA TO HOST FORUM ON POVERTY, EQUITY AND SOCIAL INCLUSION

  October 23, 2002

Venezuela is set to host the upcoming Inter-American Forum on Poverty, Equity and Social Inclusion, slated for November 20 to 22, in Caracas. The high-level meeting is being held under the purview of the Organization of American States' (OAS) Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI).

OAS Secretary General César Gaviria today signed the pertinent agreement with Venezuela's Permanent Representative to the OAS, Ambassador Jorge Valero.

In an interview after the brief signing ceremony, Ambassador Valero explained that the meeting will be a significant step towards redressing the problem of poverty. "Venezuela has been raising this issue—and has had reinforcement from the OAS member states—because the fight against poverty is a fundamental endeavor without which democracy will not advance, as democracy must have a justice component."

According to the Venezuelan diplomat, the Forum on Poverty, Equity and Social Inclusion stems from a decision taken by the Foreign Ministers of the Americas at the last OAS General Assembly, held in Barbados in June, given the importance placed on social issues, the social agenda and the fight against poverty as a top priority among hemispheric policy initiatives.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and Secretary General Gaviria are scheduled to inaugurate the Forum, which will bring together the ministers responsible for social affairs as well as permanent representatives of OAS member countries, among others.
