OAS Secretary General Supports Process of National Dialogue in Honduras with Designation of Special Representative

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, today designated Chilean diplomat John Biehl Del Río as his special representative for Honduras, to serve as a facilitator in the process of the open and inclusive National Dialogue requested by President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
The Secretary General said his special envoy “will hold extensive consultations with all of the significant actors in the country, in order to facilitate a space for a broad and inclusive dialogue, and to develop an agenda that meets the democratic aspirations of the Honduran people to build a consensus on the fight against corruption and impunity.”
Luis Almagro highlighted that the presence of Ambassador Biehl will promote the greatest participation possible among all the political and social actors in the country, and reiterated his confidence that he will be provided with all the guarantees for the proper performance of his task, which seeks to achieve consensus agreements and mechanisms for follow-up and verification of such agreements. The special representative will travel to Honduras in August to begin his work.
Ambassador John Biehl Del Río is a Chilean lawyer, political scientist and diplomat. He was a minister in the government of President Eduardo Frei, was Ambassador of Chile in the United States and has worked for the OAS as Secretary for Political Affairs and Representative of the Secretary General for the Southern Cone.
