OAS Symposium “Empowering the Future Leaders of the Americas”: Young Leaders from the Americas will be heard at the OAS
August 31, 2007
The hemisphere’s young people take center stage at a special Organization of American States (OAS) symposium, slated for September 19 and 20 in Washington, D.C., the joint initiative of the OAS Permanent Council Chair, Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador Deborah-Mae Lovell, and the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT). The symposium will bring young leaders together under the theme “Empowering the Future Leaders of the Americas.”
The event aims to present the vision of the youth of the Americas to the Permanent Council through interactive sessions involving the OAS Member State ambassadors, representatives of inter-American agencies, OAS Departments and young leaders, on such topics as:
• Responsible Citizenship and Participation in Democratic Governance
• Youth Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation
• Opportunities and Programs for Youth Development
• Underserved Youth and Youth at Risk
• Education and Information Technologies.
Before concluding their conference, the participants will submit recommendations emerging from the sessions to a special meeting of the OAS Permanent Council.
The symposium is expected to be followed by a number of interactive forums with young people both at OAS headquarters and in the Member States themselves, out of which will arise opportunities for youth perspective to be incorporated into the hemispheric agenda at the next regular OAS General Assembly session and the fifth Summit of the Americas.
According to Ambassador Lovell, “since the youth make up 65% of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean, the future of the Member States is entirely dependent on its youth”.
