SECRETARY GENERAL DELIVERS FUNDS FOR RELIEF EFFORTS IN PERU

  August 21, 2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, delivered today a contribution of US$155,000 to Peru’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Ántero Flores-Aráoz, to help reconstruction efforts in areas hit by the recent earthquake, which left hundreds of victims in Peru.

The contribution was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the OAS and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF). Several private sector foundations and companies made contributions amounting to US$130,000. The remaining US$25,000 was donated by the Inter-American Emergency Aid Fund (FONDEM).

“We know that people are still going through difficult times, and that the Peruvian government and society are making a great effort to overcome the situation they are facing. I want you to know that you have the solidarity of all the countries in the Americas. That is the reason why we are holding this ceremony. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our condolences for the victims of the earthquake,” said Secretary General Insulza.

Meanwhile, PADF President Alexander Watson said that “as the disaster relief arm of the OAS, the Pan American Development Foundation is proud to help the people of Peru, who have suffered such a severe natural disaster in the past days”.

Finally, Ambassador Ántero Flores-Aráoz declared that “the people of Peru would have preferred that the events leading to this ceremony have not happened. But they did, and we are therefore grateful for this gesture of solidarity.”

“We thank you for this show of kindness and solidarity to Peru. The OAS Charter calls for solidarity in the event of aggression, but aggression is not necessarily external—it may be caused by the forces of nature. The OAS has shown its solidarity, and it comes from the hands of the Secretary General, a good friend of Peru’s. I want to thank you for this invaluable help to Peru, in this first stage of reconstruction”, added Ambassador Flores-Aráoz.

Also present at the ceremony were the OAS Assistant Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin, and the President of the Permanent Council, Ambassador Deborah Mae-Lovell.

The contribution delivered to Peru will help purchase urgently needed emergency supplies, including tents, blankets, plastic roofs, water purifiers, building materials, food, medicine and bottled water. The donation will also help support transportation and logistic costs.
