OAS Supports Creation of Latin American and Caribbean Network of Small Hotels
April 22, 2013
The Latin American and Caribbean Network of Owners and Operators of Small Hotels was founded in San Jose, Costa Rica with the support of the Organization of American States (OAS), at a meeting held on April 18 and 19, 2013, which was attended by more than 150 businesspeople from countries throughout the region.
During the meeting participants agreed to the creation of the Network as a structural mechanism to promote collaboration, the sharing of experiences, innovative solutions and exemplary practices among small and medium-sized lodgings in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The OAS role at the event was to facilitate the negotiations for the creation of the Network among the owners of small hotels in the region. Through its experience working with small hotels, OAS seeks to provide institutional support to the Network.
During the meeting, participants also approved the creation of a Committee that is responsible for elaborating the Statutes of the Network, which will consist of two representatives from the Caribbean, two from Central America and two from the Andean region. The Committee will legally represent the Network until the statutes are approved.
It was also agreed to ask the National and Regional Associations of Small Hotels and Chambers of Tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean Regions to collaborate more closely with the Tourism Ministries and Authorities in their respective jurisdictions for mutual benefit. In addition, the possibility of the Network becoming an Associate Member of the Inter-American Tourism Comittee (CITUR) will be explored, as will its active participation as an observer of the Inter-American Congresses of Ministers and High Authorities of Tourism.
The Minister of the Presidency of Costa Rica, Carlos Ricardo Benavides; the OAS Chief of the Office of Tourism, Richard Campbell; and tourism expert Santiago Noboa, among others, participated in the event.
During the meeting a brochure on the Assessment and Monitoring of Best Practices for Sustainable Tourism for communities in Latin America was presented, which was prepared by the OAS in collaboration with Rainforest Alliance and the Canadian International Development Agency; and a Handbook on e-commerce, social networking and tourism was presented, which was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency.
