OAS Participates in Delivery to Holocaust Museum of 100 Testimonies of Survivors of the Nazi Genocide Living in Chile

  May 1, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today participated, together with members of the Chilean “Memoria Viva” Foundation, in a ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC to mark the delivery of the oral testimonies of one hundred Jewish survivors of the Nazi genocide in the Second World War.

"I'm very proud of this work, because it's the memories of a generation that is leaving," said Secretary General Insulza, referring to those survivors more than 80 years old who gave their testimonies. Insulza said that Chile is the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to provide this type of material to the Holocaust Museum, and expressed his hope that "other countries in the region will follow this example."

During the Second World War (1939-1945) more than six million Jews were murdered in concentration camps located in Nazi Germany and other European countries.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Holocaust Museum Collections, Michael W. Grunberger, emphasized the importance of audio recordings in the memory of Jewish Holocaust survivors who escaped to Chile, and expressed his desire to continue working with the "Memoria Viva" Foundation.

“This partnership with you is very important to us, it is just beginning and will strengthen over time,” said Grunberger, who added that the museum has more than 12,000 oral testimonies and also has access to another 50,000 testimonies that belong to the filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation.

For his part, the Ambassador of Chile to the White House, Felipe Bulnes, highlighted the work of the "Memoria Viva" Foundation, adding that "as a country we are totally committed to promoting tolerance and to educating our children within a culture of respect for diversity."

Foundation President Karen Codner said "it is an honor to share with you this material" because "we are sure that the one hundred testimonies will be in the best hands.”

Finally, Alejandra Morales, Executive Secretary of the “Memoria Viva” Foundation, said the survivors who testified "are now living memory, but when they die, we will only have their memories here."
