ITALY DONATES TO LANDMINE REMOVAL IN CENTRAL AMERICA

  July 30, 2003

The government of Italy today pledged a contribution of 100,000 Euros (more than $114,000) to the Organization of American States (OAS) to support landmine removal operations in Central America.

During a brief ceremony, Italian Ambassador Sergio Vento said the donation reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to this humanitarian cause, adding that antipersonnel landmines have caused great suffering in post-conflict situations. This is Italy’s third contribution to the OAS-coordinated demining program since 2001, bringing its total donations to this program to more than $478,000.

In thanking the Italian diplomat for the contribution, OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi R. Einaudi stressed that Italy has been “a prime mover” in demining in Central America and has supported citizen education efforts in mine-affected areas.

Einaudi noted that the OAS is also coordinating demining efforts along the border between Peru and Ecuador, and recently signed an agreement to help Argentina destroy stockpiled mines. “It is not generally known that we are making very major strides in the Americas toward the elimination of antipersonnel mines,” he said.

Diplomats from Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua also attended the ceremony and expressed their gratitude. Ambassador Luis Guardia, Alternate Representative of Costa Rica to the OAS, noted that his country concluded its demining operations at the end of last year, becoming the first country supported by the OAS Mine Action Program to declare itself free of landmines.
