KOREA PLEDGES CONTRIBUTION FOR OAS PROJECT IN PERU
July 25, 2003
Ambassador Soong-chull Shin, Director General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, announced yesterday a US$25,000 contribution to the Organization of American States (OAS) to support the ongoing process of decentralization in Peru.
The contribution will help finance the project “Strengthening the Capabilities of Regional Advisors and the Coordination System,” which is aimed at training the elected members of the newly established regional councils as well as developing a mechanism to coordinate their work with the various levels of government.
During the ceremony at OAS headquarters, Ambassador Shin stressed Korea’s strong relationship with the countries of the Americas and its appreciation of the work of the OAS. “The Korean government has considerable interest in promoting democracy and supporting the process of regional integration which the OAS has pursued,” he said, adding that this contribution will not only further strengthen Korean-OAS relations but also will promote and strengthen democracy in Peru.
Ambassador Luigi Einaudi, OAS Assistant Secretary General, said that Korea, the oldest Observer country from the Asian continent, has shown a particular interest in the vital area of training and education and noted the significance of this grant, which will support a program focused on decentralization. Einaudi underscored the importance of decentralization in Peru, an “extraordinary, vibrant, and diverse country.”
Also present at the ceremony was Antonio Garcia, Alternate Representative of Peru to the OAS, who said that the project constitutes the first opportunity in which the OAS provides “concrete and direct support” to a member state in the area of democratic governance, thus complying with the mandate from the last General Assembly held in Santiago, Chile.
The project in Peru is also being financed with contributions from Canada and the United Kingdom.
