OAS Secretary General Congratulates Winning Candidate of Presidential Runoff in Costa Rica

  April 7, 2014

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, congratulated the winning candidate of the presidential runoff in Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solís, to whom he expressed his best wishes for "the great task that awaits him in the leadership of his country’s future."

Insulza congratulated the future President for the high number of votes he received and highlighted "the admirable civic behavior of Costa Ricans who held election day in absolute tranquility, as is a tradition in this Central American country."

The Secretary General stressed that, according to the results presented by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), abstention was not markedly greater than what occurred in the first round, despite the special circumstances surrounding the runoff election on Sunday, "which constitutes an example of the democratic strength of Costa Rica and the electoral maturity of its people."

Finally, the Secretary General congratulated all the members of the Electoral Mission of the OAS that observed the elections in the first and second rounds, leaded by former Mexican presidential candidate Josefina Vásquez Mota, for the seriousness and efficiency with which they fulfilled their task.
