The OAS Supports the Latin American and Caribbean Rally "Schools with Sustainable Future"
April 4, 2014
The Organization of American States (OAS) has joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and other hemispheric partners to promote the "Latin American and Caribbean Rally: Schools with Sustainable Future," organized by the Vive con Esperanza Foundation.
The OAS support is based on the fact that the Ministers and High Level Authorities on Sustainable Development of the Americas gathered in Santo Domingo in 2010 agreed to promote a new culture of sustainable development based on harmony between economic, social and environmental issues, through awareness-raising and education, with an emphasis on children and youth.
This initiative contributes to the process of awareness-raising and education of the population and seeks to highlight the best strategies for education, action and social impact in energy efficiency, water management, production of healthy food, low carbon policies and sustainable waste management among the schools of Latin America and the Caribbean. This effort will involve the participation of children and young people in the local sustainable development processes as agents of change in their communities.
"As part of the jury, we are looking to highlight innovation and science and technology for sustainable development and strengthening of the local community and the leaders of tomorrow," said the Director of the Department of Sustainable Development of the OAS, Cletus Springer, who invited the hemispheric educational community to join this effort that will accept submissions from public and private schools.
The Rally, which is open until May 22, will identify a winner of the "Vive con Esperanza Award: Innovation for Sustainability" for each of the categories that represent Latin America in the International Green Award in the United Kingdom 2015, and the 10 most outstanding initiatives will be featured in the context of the Latin American and Caribbean leaders in Education, Science and Technology for Sustainability Expo, to be held on November 10, 2014. International mentions of recognition will be given to the five leading institutions in each category.
