Secretary General Meets with Young People from Latin America who Work for “A Roof for my Country”

  April 15, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the top regional leaders of “A Roof for my Country”, in the framework of a Latin American meeting that took place in Bogota, Colombia.

In front of more than 250 representatives from the hemisphere, José Miguel Insulza reviewed the issues of the Sixth Summit of the Americas that concluded today in Cartagena, Colombia, and emphasized the most urgent challenges: inequality, poverty, combating drug trafficking, climate change, generating opportunities for vulnerable groups, in particular young people, and organized crime.

Secretary General Insulza passed on to the young leaders present the concern of the governments of the hemisphere with the increasing inequality in the region and the growing power of organized crime, and emphasized that these two issues affect a high percentage of the youth of the hemisphere. José Miguel Insulza warned that “a democracy cannot exist in a society characterized by inequality,” and pointed out that “the more we are capable of improving people’s living conditions, creating public policies, the more we will advance toward solutions.”

The Secretary General complimented the “A Roof for my Country” campaign, which began in Chile and has grown across the continent, and stressed that “the importance of these kind of organizations, when integrated into the efforts of the state in this area, is fundamental for changing social conditions in the hemisphere.” “A Roof for my Country” is a non-governmental organization made up of young volunteers who have been working on programs to support marginal settlements in the hemisphere for more than two decades, building worthy housing, together with communities.
