Declaration of the OAS General Secretariat on International Migrants Day

  December 18, 2020

Today as we commemorate International Migrants Day, we highlight the invaluable contributions and sacrifices that migrants and their families have made in being on the front lines of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and recognize their work to keep different essential services running such as health, food, transportation, as well as the care of our children, the elderly and other people.

Millions of migrants make these contributions to our societies while still facing various challenges for their full inclusion and the respect and guarantee of their human rights. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all, the evidence shows us that those who have been most affected are vulnerable groups, including migrants, especially those in an irregular migratory situation.

According to the most recent figures from the United Nations, at the end of 2019, there were 70.3 million international migrants in the Americas, including 58.6 million in North America and 11.7 million in Latin America and the Caribbean. At the OAS, we will continue working with member and observer states, international organizations, civil society organizations, and migrants to strengthen the efforts undertaken to achieve their full inclusion in response and recovery policies in the face of the pandemic of COVID-19. Guaranteeing our motto of "more rights for more people" implies leaving no one behind and that includes all migrants, regardless of their immigration status.

Finally, on this day that also marks 30 years since the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, we must reiterate our commitment to guarantee the human rights of migrants and to continue working to generate regular channels that allow their regularization. Therefore, we reaffirm the commitment of the OAS General Secretariat to provide technical cooperation and cooperation to member states for the development of public policies for safe, orderly and regular migration in accordance with international treaties on the matter, the Global Compact for a Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.
