OAS Mission in Paraguay Begins Final Deployment

  April 4, 2013

The Electoral Observation and Political Accompaniment Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) in Paraguay, present in the country since February, began its final deployment ahead of the upcoming general elections on April 21. This week, the Deputy Chief of Mission arrived in the country to hold meetings with the various actors in the electoral process and to follow up on the organization of the elections. During the next few days the number of OAS technicians and observers in the country will increase progressively, ultimately comprising a mission of some 55 people from different countries of the region. The Chief of Mission, the former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Dr. Óscar Arias, will arrive in Paraguay in the coming days.

Since its arrival in the country, the Mission has closely followed the development of the organization of the elections. A team of observers has travelled to 12 of the 17 departments of the country and the capital in order to gather information from local election officials, representatives of political parties and representatives of civil society about the development of the process. Also, the EOM/OAS was present at the simulation of the system of Rapid Transmission of Results held on March 24.

Following the mandates set forth in the Inter-American Democratic Charter, the OAS Mission has observed the different aspects of this election, including legal and technological aspects, the participation of women and men in elections, and campaign financing, among other issues. It will also follow up on complaints, concerns or worries that may arise during the electoral process and forward them to the appropriate authorities for processing.
