SECRETARY GENERAL CONDEMNS SLAYING OF BRAZILIAN JOURNALIST

  June 10, 2002

Expressing indignation and sadness at the death of Brazilian television journalist Tim Lopes, of Globo channel, Organization of American States Secretary General César Gaviria renewed his warning about the threat that drug trafficking poses to freedom of expression and democracy in the Americas.

"These criminal organizations always behave in the same way," said Gaviria. "They begin by trampling upon press freedom-which they fear most-and then try to erode the legitimacy of the state, using terror and corruption." Gaviria recalled the statement the OAS Inter-American Commission on Human Rights' Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression issued on the Lopes case a few days ago, stressing that "the disappearance of a journalist is not only a violation of his or her right to life and to safety and security, but is also a serious obstacle to freedom of expression."

Gaviria said defending democracy is a never-ending job in which journalists also have a crucial role to play. He said, "this cowardly assassination is another example of the serious dangers they face."

The Secretary General also conveyed his condolences to Lopes' family and lauded the bold decision by Brazilian journalists to state that they would not be intimidated by drug trafficking.
