OAS General Secretariat Condemns Violence in Protests in Colombia and Welcomes Peaceful Demonstrators

  November 22, 2019

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) condemns the acts of violence that took place this week in Cali, Bucaramanga and other parts of Colombia, while welcoming the civil behavior of all the Colombians who demonstrated peacefully.

Similarly, the Secretariat recognizes the attachment to the institutions and the rule of law of the Government of President Iván Duque to lead the country within the framework of principles of respect, development and progress.

The right to peaceful protest and the freedom of expression are part of the fundamental values of the Americas and must always be respected.

As President Duque said yesterday regarding the national strike of November 21 in Colombia, it is fundamental to listen constantly to the citizenry and maintain a constant and constructive dialogue.

However, the right to peaceful protest cannot be used to protect acts of vandalism or violence against public and private property.
