OAS Audits Voter Registry of Paraguay

  March 31, 2010

This April 5th a team of experts of the Organization of American States (OAS) will begin auditing the Voter Registry of Paraguay. The specialists will hold meetings with members of the Superior Court of Electoral Justice and with directors of different technical areas.

Regarding this new challenge to the OAS, Pablo Gutiérrez, Director of the Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation, affirmed: “We complied with our commitment of beginning the deployment of technicians that we will work in this audit during the first week of April. We trust that the efforts of all who participate in this process will help carry out this important task to strengthen the Paraguayan electoral system. Our next step will be to train and deploy the auditors in the municipalities and localities, and they will provide information from the field that will give a clear picture of the Voter Registry of this country.”

In May 2009 the SG/OAS and the Superior Court of Electoral Justice signed a cooperation agreement to establish the regulatory framework for the elaboration of a technical cooperation project between the two institutions. With that objective an operations plan was developed and presented to the authorities containing the components to be audited and describing the work in the field.

This audit will be conducted with financial resources from the United States and Canada.
