STATEMENT BY OAS SECRETARY GENERAL JOSÉ MIGUEL INSULZA ON MURDER OF GUYANESE MINISTER

The following statement was issued by José Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), upon receiving news of the slaying on April 22 of the Minister of Agriculture of Guyana, Satyadeow Sawh:

“It is with regret and a deep sense of loss that we at the OAS learned of the slaying of the Honorable Satyadeow Sawh, Minister of Agriculture of Guyana, members of his family and security guard on Saturday, April 22.

“On behalf of the OAS, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Minister Sawh and other victims of the attack, and to the government and people of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana over the loss of this dedicated servant of the nation and others in his company. The OAS further wishes a full and speedy recovery to the injured survivors.

“The OAS strongly condemns this heinous act and calls on the appropriate authorities to engage in an immediate and thorough investigation to identify, apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime to the maximum extent under the law.”
