OAS Secretary General Rejects Criticism of EOM Chief in El Salvador

  March 10, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, today firmly rejected the comments made by the Ambassador of Venezuela to the Organization, Roy Chaderton, regarding Lourdes Flores, Peruvian politician who currently heads the OAS Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) in El Salvador.

While expressing his support to the work of Lourdes Flores, Secretary General Insulza said that the former presidential candidate enjoys his respect and that of the Peruvian society, for she has been a reliable politician that has served the cause of democracy in her country, but also in the international arena.

Insulza mentioned that the Electoral Observation Missions sent by the OAS to the countries which request it have always been led by personalities of different political orientation, a criterion emanated from the reality of the Organization, which today reflects the ideologies of the region’s 34 democratically elected governments.

Finally, the Head of the Hemispheric Organization said that EOMs comply with a set of rules previously known to all Member States.
