IN MEETING WITH BAHAMAS PRIME MINISTER, OAS SECRETARY GENERAL DISCUSSES SITUATION IN CARIBBEAN AND LATIN AMERICA

  March 19, 2008

Meeting at the Organization of American States headquarters in Washington on March 19, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham of the Bahamas and Secretary General José Miguel Insulza reviewed the situation of Haiti and OAS programs there, in particular those concerned with institutional strengthening and capacity-building. They also restated their commitment to helping to bring about stability for Haitians.

As well, they touched on efforts to help settle the recent conflict between Ecuador and Colombia—and the invaluable OAS mediation that helped head off the political and diplomatic crisis.

Other officials in attendance at the meeting included OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin and Permanent Representative of the Bahamas to the OAS Ambassador Cornelius A. Smith, who is also Chairman of the Permanent Council.

Smith had accompanied the Secretary General on the recent OAS fact-finding Special Mission to Ecuador and Colombia following the March 1 incident on the border shared by those two countries. The Bahamian Permanent Representative and Assistant Secretary General Ramdin also has led an OAS delegation on a February 14 to 17 visit to Haiti, to follow up on OAS projects there and for a first-hand view of the country’s current political situation.

In his meeting with the Prime Minister, Secretary General Insulza lauded the role of the Bahamas in promoting political and social stability in Haiti and for actively participating in the Commission that went to Ecuador and Colombia from March 8 to 12. The Bahamian diplomat was also part of the special OAS group that met with Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa and Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe and members of their respective governments as well as military high command.
