REPUBLIC OF KOREA DONATES TO OAS PEACE FUND

  April 9, 2002

Ambassador Sung-chul Yang, the Permanent Observer of the Republic of Korea, today presented a contribution of $50,000 to the Organization of American States for the Peace Funds set up to resolve, inter alia, the Belize-Guatemala and the Honduras-Nicaragua territorial disputes. Ongoing negotiations between Belize and Guatemala and between Honduras and Nicaragua are being facilitated by the OAS.

The Ambassador said the contribution is a small token of Korea's active interest in helping to promote peaceful settlements pertaining to disputed areas of this region. Recalling challenges in the Korean Peninsula itself, Yang, who is also Ambassador to the United States, cited the contributions Latin American countries had made during the Korean War. He also indicated that some positive developments were "in the offing" in that Peninsula.

The OAS Assistant Secretary General, Luigi Einaudi, thanked the Korean government for this as well as its previous contributions, which he described as an indication of Korea's "steadfast" solidarity. He lauded Korea for being the first Asian country to contribute to the Peace Fund, adding that, given Korean President Kim-dae Jung's historic role promoting democracy and human rights, this contribution "is very important for us."

Belize Ambassador to the OAS Lisa Shoman and Nicaragua's Ambassador Lombardo Martínez, representing the two beneficiary negotiation processes, expressed appreciation for the Korean assistance. Shoman further said that Belize and Guatemala hope to be able to announce shortly concrete steps towards a final settlement of their dispute.
