OAS Mourns the Loss of Uruguayan Artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and Flies Flag at Half Mast

  February 24, 2014

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, lamented the death of globally known Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, who maintained a close relationship with the multilateral institution. "The OAS has lost a great friend, my condolences and those of everyone in our Organization to his family and friends and for all the Uruguayan people," said the head of the hemispheric Organization.

"Uruguay, America and the world have lost a great artist, whom from the universality of art gave a personal and unmistakable quality to his work. Few have shaped the diversity and the essential character of our Hemisphere like he did, and the resonance of his work was felt around the world," said Insulza and recalled that "Páez Vilaró honored us with a unique and spectacular mural that adorns our headquarters in Washington, DC."

Páez Vilaró painted in 1960 a mural titled "Roots of Peace," which adorns the wall of the tunnel connecting the two main buildings of the OAS headquarters in the United States capital. The work, some 180 meters in length, depicts various topics related to peace and development in the Americas, and to carry out the project, Páez Vilaró had the help of 53 volunteer artists. The mural was restored in 1975 by the artist himself.

The Secretary General of the OAS ordered the flag of the Organization at its headquarters today to be flown at half mast in tribute to the late artist, an honor reserved for the highest authorities and personalities of the Hemisphere.
