OAS Secretary General Expresses Consternation regarding Tragedy in Honduras

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed deep consternation regarding the tragic events in the Comayagua,Honduras, prison, and expressed his solidarity with President Porfirio Lobo’s government regarding the tragedy caused by a fire in the prison that has killed more than three hundred people.

Following conversations with the Permanent Representative of Honduras to the OAS, Ambassador Leonidas Rosa Bautista, to convey the Organization’s solidarity, Insulza requested the Chair of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Dinah Shelton, to send a delegation, including the Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty, Rodrigo Escobar, to Honduras to investigate the events that led to the tragic prison fire. Following its investigation, the delegation will present a comprehensive report of its findings to the Honduran government and the hemispheric organization.
