OAS and Government of El Salvador Sign Agreement for Electoral Observation Mission

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of El Salvador signed the Agreement of Immunities and Privileges for the OAS Electoral Observation Mission, for the Elections of Representatives to the Legislative Assembly and Members of Municipal Councils this March 11.

The OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, highlighted that “since the signing of the Peace Agreements, the OAS has accompanied the citizens and authorities of El Salvador in the task of perfecting the electoral system, sending observation missions in five opportunities.” In this sense, he expressed satisfaction “to once again be able to contribute with a grain of sand so the consolidation of democracy may continue in this sister country.”

With the goal of deploying this Mission, the OAS Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) is already conducting the necessary motions for the Collection of funds and hopes that in the following days it will have the valuable support of the Member States and observer countries of the OAS that make possible the work of the Electoral Observation Missions, key instruments for the promotion and strengthening of democracy in the countries of the hemisphere.”

At the conclusion of the electoral process, and as is normal procedure, the Mission will present a report before the Permanent Council of the Organization.
