FRANCE CONTRIBUTES TO OAS HUMAN RIGHTS PROMOTION IN HAITI

  March 12, 2004

The government of France announced today a $150,000 contribution to help the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) promote and monitor human rights and economic, social and cultural rights in Haiti this year. The donation will also boost the efforts of the Organization of American States (OAS) human rights body to promote freedom of expression and the rights of women and children in Haiti.

Ambassador Sylvie Alvarez, the French Permanent Observer to the OAS, announced the donation during a brief ceremony with IACHR President José Zalaquett and Vice Chairman Clare Roberts, the latter also the Commission’s Rapporteur for Haiti. The ceremony followed a press conference that concluded the Commission’s three-week 119th regular session.

In supporting the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the French government is demonstrating “its full confidence in this most important body of the Organization of American States,” Ambassador Alvarez asserted, praising the agency’s “major role in the defense of human rights in the Americas.”

She went on to explain, “It is also a gesture of political meaning: the defense and promotion of human rights and freedom of expression are, indeed, a priority of the government I represent.”

Expressing appreciation, Zalaquett stressed that “France’s support for the Commission’s efforts will certainly enhance human rights protection throughout the Americas, particularly in Haiti. The current crisis there has made the Commission more engaged than ever.”

For his part, Roberts reiterated the human rights commission’s position that Haiti desperately needs the support of the international community. “I am pleased, therefore, to see that the French government has answered our call in this respect.”
