ANTI-DRUG EXPERTS FROM THE REGION MEET AT OAS

  March 1, 2005

Government anti-drug experts from around the Americas are meeting at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) until March 9 to continue the work of the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM), which examines progress against illegal drugs on a national and hemispheric basis.

In opening the meeting yesterday, OAS Acting Secretary General Luigi R. Einaudi said the MEM has been a catalyst for multilateral cooperation and assistance within the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD).

“Through the MEM, CICAD has been able to develop common standards to evaluate factors such as the impact of drug abuse, transnational organized crime, corruption and money laundering, all of which significantly affect the economic well-being of society and the security of its citizens,” Einaudi said.

The MEM, which was mandated by the 1998 Summit of the Americas, “has been one of the most successful and important of all Summit decisions,” Einaudi said, adding that the countries have made considerable progress in implementing concrete MEM recommendations.

The Director of the Summits of the Americas Secretariat, Luis Alberto Rodríguez, reminded the experts that the drug problem has been an ongoing issue of concern to the region’s Heads of State and Government, who will meet in November in Mar del Plata, Argentina, for the Fourth Summit of the Americas.

During the current drafting session, the Governmental Expert Group will complete its reports on the third evaluation round of the MEM, covering 2003 and 2004. The preliminary reports will be presented for final revision and approval at CICAD’s next regular session, scheduled for April 26 to 29 in the Dominican Republic.
