STATEMENT OF OAS SECRETARY GENERAL ON BOMBINGS IN SPAIN

  March 11, 2004

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), César Gaviria, strongly condemned this morning's terrorist bombings in three train stations in Spain and expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. “These brutal actions carried out by terrorists are a demonstration of weakness and cowardice. We express our solidarity with all the victims’ families.”

Gaviria went on to state, “The coordinated bombings in the Santa Eugenia, El Pozo and Atocha train stations in Madrid are a premeditated assault on all the democratic and free states of the world. The countries in the community of the Americas reject this cowardly aggression and express their condolences to the Spanish people, as well as their solidarity with the government and with the institutions of the Kingdom of Spain in this difficult time.”
