OAS AND COUNCIL OF EUROPE REITERATE IMPORTANCE OF SECURITY, HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY

Security, democracy and human rights featured prominently in an exchange on issues of mutual interest between Organization of American States (OAS) Acting Secretary General Luigi R. Einaudi and Council of Europe Chairman, Dr. Adam Daniel Rotfeld, Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister, during a luncheon meeting Einaudi hosted today.

During their discussions, Ambassador Einaudi and Dr. Rotfeld underscored the need to build universalism from the bottom up, in which regard Secretary General Einaudi cited both the Council of Europe and the OAS as fundamental building blocks for that new order.

The Polish minister spoke about the important role of regional organizations in security stabilization, and stated that democracy and human rights within countries are a critical element of for security today. He lauded OAS efforts in this context.

Among the delegation accompanying the Polish minister were his country’s Permanent Observer to the OAS, Ambassador Przemyslaw Grudzinski and the director of the Americas Bureau of Poland’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Henryk Szlajfer.

During their visit to the OAS, the Polish delegation also met with the chairman of the OAS Permanent Council, Ambassador Manuel María Cáceres of Paraguay; Ambassadors accredited to the OAS from Honduras, Mexico, Suriname and the United States; Permanent Observers of France, Italy and Spain; and several high ranking officials of the OAS Secretariat.

Since 1987, the Council of Europe and the OAS have maintained a framework agreement for cooperation, and among the topics of conversation was the revision of that agreement with a particular focus on the respect for human rights, the protection of democracy and the rule of law.
