New Permanent Representative of Ecuador Presented his Credentials to the OAS

  January 13, 2014

The new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Marco Albuja, today presented his credentials to the Secretary General of the hemispheric institution, José Miguel Insulza, during a ceremony at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

During the presentation Ambassador Albuja pledged ”to help strengthen the Inter-American System," and work to ensure the Organization “occupies the position it should given its history.” "We believe," he added "that the OAS is a strong Organization, regardless of what the political opposition in a country say through the media, and we recognize it as the only political forum where we can discuss all the countries of the hemisphere."

The Ecuadorian diplomat said he will do his best to "show the people of America what is the true value and position of the OAS."

Secretary General Insulza praised the "enormous legal and political heritage” that the Ecuadorian diplomat can brings to the OAS "at a time when we need a major renovation of our work and our purpose." He recalled that last year the member states made a commitment that "this year the Organization would change," to open the debate on the Strategic Vision of the OAS, as proposed by the Secretary General.

"We are going to make what we have been talking about a reality in the sense that the activities of the Organization must be adapted to the realities of our time." He stressed that among these new realities the region shows "much greater democratic strength than any other time in its history, which has developed significantly in some countries in recent years."

He argued that the Organization he leads brings together, as laid out in its Democratic Charter, "all of the independent republics of the Americas." "We hope they are all here and all are represented and can discuss settling their differences through discussion and consensus, and therefore we want everyone here and I hope that this presence can strengthen this aspect," he concluded.
