OAS Member States to Discuss New Drug Trends and Future Regional Actions at CICAD Meeting

The member states of the Organization of Americans States (OAS) will participate in the 56th regular session of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), from November 19-21 in Guatemala City, Guatemala, where they will discuss new, current, and emerging trends in drugs.
CICAD will follow up on the Guatemala Resolution approved at the OAS Extraordinary General Assembly on September 19, 2014, in Guatemala City. This document, which was a follow up to the Antigua Declaration, approved at the Regular Meeting of the OAS General Assembly in 2013, specifically tasks drug commissioners with moving forward on a public health approach to the drug problem, alternatives to incarceration for drug related offenses, greater international cooperation on money laundering and asset forfeiture, and the development of a new hemispheric plan of action on drugs for the period 2016-2020.
The delegations from OAS member states will also discuss perspectives on regulated markets and marijuana for medicinal use; maritime narcotrafficking; approval of the 34 national reports of the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism (MEM); and other current issues facing the countries in the region.
The meeting will include the participation of other organizations and strategic partners, such as the Pan-American Health Organization, and representatives of civil society and OAS Permanent Observer countries.
Moreover, for the third consecutive year, the CICAD meeting will be preceded by the Meeting of Civil Society which will analyze "New Approaches to Drug Law Enforcement and Responses to Organized Crime.” This event will take place on Tuesday, November 18 at the Hotel Vista Real in Guatemala City.
The CICAD meeting will be chaired by Hector Lopez Bonilla, Minister of the Interior of Guatemala.
