Former Presidents of Costa Rica and Guatemala Oscar Arias and Vinicio Cerezo Participate in Debate at the OAS on 25 years of Peace in Central America

The former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias and former President of Guatemala Vinicio Cerezo will be the main speakers at the XLIX Lecture of the Americas of the Organization of American States (OAS), to be held on August 14 at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC under the title "25 years after the Esquipulas Agreements: Opportunities and Challenges in Central America."

The event, which will be opened by the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Esquipulas I and II Agreements. Speakers will reflect on the progress and the challenges to democracy in Central America, as well as the economic and social development and security situation in the region.

Former President Cerezo will deliver a presentation entitled "The Road to Esquipulas," followed by a high-level panel discussion on the issue: "Central America: Then and Now." Participating in the panel will be former Vice President of Guatemala Eduardo Stein, former Chair of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs Michael Barnes, former Ambassador of Nicaragua and political analyst Arturo Cruz, and the Director of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center Cynthia Arnson. The discussion will be moderated by the President of the Inter-American Dialogue, Michael Shifter. The Chair will conclude with a presentation by former President Arias on "The Legacy of Esquipulas: Which way now for Central America?"
