OAS to Hold Hemispheric Workshop on Security and Cybercrime

  May 6, 2011

The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) and the Working Group on Cybercrime of the Meetings of Ministers of Justice or Other Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas (REMJA), will hold a “Hemispheric Workshop on Security and Cybercrime: Coordination and Information Exchange” from May 9 to 13, 2011, in Miami.

The objective of the event, organized jointly with the Departments of Justice and State of the United States, is to discuss ongoing initiatives and pending challenges regarding the coordination and exchange of information among governments, law enforcement institutions and National Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs). Among the guests to the opening session are Gordon Duguid, CICTE Executive Secretary; Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States; and Anthony Teelucksingh, Senior Advisor of REMJA.

The opening session will be held May 9 at 9:00 EDT (13:00 GMT), and will be open to the press. Journalists who wish to participate must contact Belisario Contreras ([email protected]) or Brian Dito ([email protected]) of CICTE in advance.

Experts participating in the workshop will present case studies on the exchange of information and cooperation mechanisms in other regions of the world, and participants will be invited to share the best practices they have employed. CSIRT technicians will participate in a technical exercise to test the existing lines of communication between OAS Member States and how to become better prepared in case of a cybernetic incident.
