OAS Hosts High Level Dialogue on Transition to a Circular Economy in the Americas
May 2, 2015
The Organization of American States (OAS) will host on Monday, May 4, at its headquarters in Washington DC, a high-level dialogue titled “Facilitating the Transition toward Circular Economies in the Americas,” that will be inaugurated by the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, and will include the participation of Ton Bastein, from the Organization for Applied Scientific Research of the Netherlands, and William McDonough, Chair of the Meta-Council on Circular Economy of the World Economic Council.
During the event, participants will discuss experiences in Colombia, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago in the framework of the Closed Loop Cycle Production in the Americas program, showing the potential for replication of this program in other countries of the region as a contribution to sustainable development.
The Declaration of Santo Domingo for the Sustainable Development of the Americas resolved to promote sustainable development of all productive sectors in the Hemisphere and foster improved environmental performance of those sectors, promoting sustainable patterns of production and consumption. In this context, the Department of Sustainable Development of the OAS has worked with international strategic partners in introducing and applying the design and production methodology inspired by the design principles of Cradle-to-Cradle. This methodology focuses on developing the circular reuse of everything produced, as an alternative to the linear economic model of “take-make-waste.”
The dialogue will include panel discussions entitled “Potential for a Global Circular Economy?” “Opportunities for Circular Economies in the Americas,” and “Pioneering Circular Economies in the Americas.”
The dialogue will be broadcast live on the OAS Website
