OAS HOSTS MEETING OF EXPERTS ON DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE

Experts will gather at the Organization of American States (OAS) Headquarters for two days beginning tomorrow, November 12, to discuss the strengthening of democratic governance in the Americas.

Coordinated by the OAS Unit for the Promotion of Democracy in keeping with a mandate from the last OAS General Assembly session, held in Santiago, Chile, last June, the meeting will be held in the General Secretariat Building (1889 F Street, NW, Washington DC).

The experts include recognized leaders from government, civil society, international institutions and academia, who will share ideas concerning top priorities in the area of strengthening of democratic governance. The experts will prepare an analysis on the strengthening of democratic governance in the region, and will present them along with recommendations to the Permanent Council for consideration and referral to the forthcoming Special Summit of the Americas, to be held in Mexico.

Organized under 6 working groups, the meeting will discuss governance as it relates to cooperation and integration; economic development; social development; state modernization; representative democracy; and human rights and public safety and security.
