OAS TO HOLD MEETING IN JAMAICA ON POLITICAL PARTIES

Some fifty political leaders, civil society representatives and academics from the hemisphere will participate in the Caribbean Meeting of the Inter-American Forum on Political Parties, which will begin this Wednesday, April 27, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The three day meeting convened by the Organization of American States (OAS) will examine issues related to political challenges in the region, including constitutional reform, economic integration, political developments in Haiti, the role of women, and policies to curb poverty, violence and unemployment.

Jamaican Prime Minister P.J Patterson will deliver the closing keynote speech. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua and Barbuda will also be a featured speaker at the conference. The Assistant Secretary General of CARICOM, Colin Granderson, will inaugurate the event along with Jacqueline Deslauriers, the Director of the OAS Office of the Promotion of Democracy.

The OAS will also present the preliminary findings of its comparative analysis “From the Grassroots to the Airwaves: Paying for Political Parties and Campaigns in the Caribbean.”
