OAS AND CITES WILL HOST A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON THE FUTURE OF AMAZONIAN TIMBER, ELEPHANTS, RHINOS, TIGERS, AND OTHER 34,000 SPECIES

The Organization of American States (OAS) through the Department of Sustainable Development, jointly with the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), will hold a roundtable discussion in support activities for the Conservation and sustainable use of the 34,000 species of wild animals and plants protected by the CITES. The event will take place on February 25, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at the OAS General Secretariat Building in Washington D.C.
Discussions will be launched with remarks by OAS Executive Secretary for Integral Development, Alfonso Quiñonez and CITES Secretary General, Willem Wijnstekers. The roundtable discussion will gather representatives of international organizations, development agencies, and non-governmental organizations working on the conservation of tigers, rhinos, elephants and the sustainable use of Amazonian timber species such as Mahogany, Cedar and Dalbergia. Panelists are expected to identify synergies and opportunities for cooperation on the CITES work program and efforts conducted in OAS Member States based on the activities identified during the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
The initiatives to be discussed will focus on the following areas:1) Regulating and monitoring wildlife trade, 2) Integrating best available scientific information into decision making, 3) Reducing over-exploitation and illegal trade,4) Building capacity and information systems, 5) Mobilizing resources and raising awareness, 6) Enhancing cooperation with strategic partners, 7) Preparation of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (Qatar, 2010).
Since the First Summit of the Americas in 1994, OAS Member States have committed to building capacity for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and for the implementation of CITES.
